Wizz Air, Romania’s largest airline, today has officially reopened its base in Târgu Mureș and welcomed one state-of-the-art Airbus A320neo aircraft. The airline now offers 10 routes to eight countries from “Transylvania” International Airport, with 460 thousand seats on sale for this year allocated in Târgu Mureș alone. Wizz Air continues to offer more affordable travel options, meeting the growing demand for budget-friendly flights both for meeting friends and relatives and for leisure, with tickets already available online on Wizz Air’s official website and through its mobile app.
Târgu Mureș was the first airport that Wizz Air ever operated from in Romania, with the inaugural flight in 2006. Now, almost 20 years later and with a consolidated position in Romania, the airline is pleased to make another step forward in expanding its operations even further. The new allocated aircraft will enhance connectivity from the city by enabling the launch of nine routes. Starting from the end of this March, passengers can fly from Târgu Mureș to Brussels Charleroi (Belgium), Larnaca (Cyprus), Paris Beauvais (France), Dortmund and Memmingen (Germany), Milan Bergamo and Rome Fiumicino (Italy), Basel (Switzerland), as well as London Luton (UK), in addition to the current Budapest connection.
Speaking at a press conference, Anastasia Novak, Corporate & Sustainability Communications Manager at Wizz Air, said: “We are delighted to mark the beginning of the 2026 aviation summer season with the reopening of our Târgu Mureș base, now fully operational and supported by one state-of-the-art aircraft. With this addition, we are launching nine new routes from this wonderful city, expanding our local network across eight countries. This is a proud moment at Wizz Air, as Romania remains a key market for us and especially as Târgu Mureș was the first airport we operated from in the country back in 2006. We are excited to welcome passengers on board, to travel on our newly introduced services from the renewed Târgu Mureș base.”
On the occasion of the official launch event of the new flights, the Vice President of the Mureș County Council, Csibi Attila, stated: “On Sunday morning, the first aircraft took off from here to Brussels. It was the first day when the airport operated as it should have for a long time. Nine new routes. Direct connections. Affordable. Closer to Europe – not a slogan, but a reality. This did not happen by itself. It required decision, direction, and consistent work. I believed in this project from the very beginning, and I still believe today that this is only the beginning. Because an airport does not function through words alone, but when it responds to a real need. And I am glad that we managed to turn this expectation into reality. Work will continue so that this region becomes not only accessible, but also visible and attractive, because development is not measured only by how many people depart from here, but also by how many arrive here.”
The Director of “Transylvania” Airport, Peti András, spoke about the development of the airport infrastructure: “The investments made recently are designed for the next 20 years. We have enabled the parking of five based aircraft by expanding the apron, increased the terminal’s capacity to accommodate one thousand passengers simultaneously, and improved passenger flow by acquiring modern security screening equipment for passengers and baggage. The other investments share the same long-term goal: to provide services at European standards for both passengers and airlines.”
