Wizz Air and Cluj Avram Iancu International Airport offer 42 destinations in 20 countries for the summer season
Wizz Air, Romania’s largest low-cost airline, alongside Cluj Avram Iancu International Airport and Cluj County Council, today celebrates the 18th anniversary of its base in the Transylvanian city, which opened on May 15th, 2008.
The partnership between the airline and the airport continues to deliver on its promise of providing affordable travel opportunities and low-fare deals for passengers in Cluj. Since its first flight from Cluj-Napoca to Budapest in 2007, more than 23 million passengers have booked tickets with Wizz Air to and from Cluj Avram Iancu International Airport. With seven based aircraft, Wizz Air has continued to contribute to the development of the local community and economy, while also stimulating the local job market in aviation and tourism.
The airline has grown significantly since its arrival in Cluj-Napoca, expanding its route network and now reaching 42 destinations across 20 countries. Since the beginning of this year’s summer aviation season, the airline has relaunched the routes to Antalya, Berlin and, more recently, Milan Malpensa.
More routes will follow next week, with the relaunched of the Malta service from May 22nd, operating on Mondays and Fridays, and the brand-new Dubrovnik connection starting on May 23rd, taking off each Tuesday and Saturday, further expanding the city’s summer holiday offer. Fares start at just RON 129*, with tickets already available on wizzair.com and via the WIZZ mobile app.
András Radó, Head of Communications at Wizz Air, said: “We are pleased to mark 18 years of operations from Cluj-Napoca, a key base for Wizz Air since 2008. This milestone comes ahead of the airline’s 20th anniversary in Romania. Over the past 18 years, passenger traffic to and from Cluj Airport has grown significantly, and we are proud to have contributed to strengthening the city’s connections with destinations across Europe and beyond. Wizz Air remains dedicated to Romanian passengers and to its mission of making travel more accessible, with affordable fares and exciting destinations to discover. Let’s WIZZ!”
The President of the Cluj County Council, Mr. Alin Tişe, stated on this occasion: “The 18th anniversary of the establishment of Wizz Air’s operational base in Cluj reflects the remarkable evolution of Cluj International Airport and the strengthening of its strategic role in the development of the Transylvania region. This partnership has significantly contributed to increasing the region’s international connectivity, to economic development, and to bringing the Cluj community closer to major European centres. The Cluj County Council will continue to support investments and development projects that strengthen the position of Cluj Airport as Romania’s main regional airport.”
Mr. Viorel Federiga, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Cluj International Airport, stated on the occasion of this event: “The 18 years of collaboration between Cluj International Airport and Wizz Air demonstrate the importance of a shared vision focused on development, performance, and connectivity. The steady growth of the airline’s operations at Cluj Airport has had a direct impact on passenger mobility and the region’s economic appeal. We are pleased that, together, we have managed to build a solid and lasting partnership that continues to generate significant benefits for the community and our passengers.”
Mr. David Ciceo, General Manager of Avram Iancu Cluj International Airport, stated: “The strategic partnership between Cluj International Airport and Wizz Air, which began in 2007 with service to just four destinations — Rome, Barcelona, Budapest, and London — has played a decisive role in developing air connectivity in the Transylvania region and in strengthening Cluj’s position as a major economic and academic hub at the European level. Today, 18 years after establishing its operational base in Cluj, Wizz Air operates over 40 international destinations with its seven aircraft based at Cluj Airport, and the introduction of new routes such as Antalya, Berlin, Milan Malpensa, Malta, and Dubrovnik reaffirms the regional market’s growth potential and the increased interest in direct connectivity. Between 2007 and 2026, over 23 million passengers travelled with Wizz Air from Cluj International Airport, reflecting the success and maturity of a strategic partnership that continues to generate significant benefits for the entire region.”
